First image of man-made vehicle moving across the surface of another planet.  July 5, 1997

Although it may seem overly romantic, this simple image carries with it all of the history and portent of other first events -- such as Samuel Morse's first telegraph message, "What hath God wrought?," or Charles Lindberg's landing at Orly Field, Paris, or the Eagle's descent and landing onto the Sea of Tranquility. First events are often meager things, but they tend to be remembered forever.
